Drop one of these Australian burger patties onto a hot grill & listen; you'll hear it starting to sizzle and release its delicious aromas – and the outside will soon brown and caramelise just like a proper burger should!

After a few minutes of sizzle time each side, pop it into your favourite bun (or – if you’re super hungry, why not load the bun up with two patties!) and add a layer of tomatoes, onion, sliced avo, burger relish and mayo (preferably vegan!).   It goes really well with wasabi mayo or garlic aioli.

Ingredients: Water, Textured soy protein (defatted soy flour, caramel 150), sunflower oil, coconut oil, yeast extract, pea protein, vinegar powder (262ii), stabiliser (461), soy lecithin, natural flavouring, salt, fermented sugar, vinegar, beetroot powder.

Allergen advice: Contains soy. Manufactured on a premises that also handles tree nuts & sesame seeds.

Preparing and Cooking your Byron Bay  Burgers

Barbeque Icon

Cooking your Byron Bay Burger is just like cooking a traditional meat burger.  Unlike some plant-based burgers, the Byron Bay Burger comes raw – but only takes a few minutes to prepare.

Step 1.   Heat up a frying pan on your stovetop.  Add a tiny drop of oil but you don’t need much.

Step 2.  Once the pan is nice and hot, drop the patties into the pan.  As they’re raw they will be a little soft but they’ll firm up on the heat.

Now you can start prepping your buns.   A good layer of lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, and avo are all great but -hey – it’s your burger – you go with what you fancy!

Step 3.  After 3-4 minutes flip the patties over and let them cook on the other side for the same length of time.

Step 4.  Put the patties in the bun, finish with a layer of relish and serve.

Step 5.  There is no step 5!  Unless you count the washing up, but let’s leave that for later!

Tip:  If you have a sandwich press you can cook both sides at once!

What's in them?

Many people worry that plant-based meat products are overly processed and artificial and thus should be avoided.

Obviously burgers don’t grow on trees (now wouldn’t be a popular tree though!) so clearly we do need to some work to turn the raw plant ingredients into a burger that looks and tastes like a meaty “traditional” burger.  However, the processing involved isn’t so complicated and isn’t any more involved than many products you will find in your local supermarket, such as breakfast cereals and packaged cakes (have you ever looked at the list of ingredients of a supermarket cake?).

So while we took a long time and experimentation  to create something as delicious as the Byron Bay Burger – if you were to visit our kitchen in Byron Bay, you’d see that to produce your delicious burgers, we’re actually using the same type of equipment that you might use in your own kitchen – just on a  bigger scale!

What’s more, the Byron Bay Burger doesn’t contain any artificial colours, flavours or preservatives – but we want to be completely open about what we put into our burgers, and why it’s there.   So we’ve listed all the key ingredients below so you can see exactly what you’re eating.

But why do they taste so good, we hear you ask!  Well, that bit is a secret ;)

100% Plant Based

Like everything we do at Big Owl Foods, the Byron Bay Burger is 100% plant-based.  Research shows that to produce a plant based burger you need just a 20th of the land and a 10th of the water than you do a for a conventional meat burger.    Perhaps even more importantly, it produces less than a 10th of the greenhouse gases!

Every Purchase Helps Australian Wildlife

Every purchase helps local wildlife.   We decided from the outset that a proportion of all the profits from the Byron Bay Burger would go straight back into helping wildlife – given the devastating fires and floods that have decimated our wildlife in the past 18 months, we wanted to do what we can to help.
